Breville is Australia's most popular espresso machine brand — and with good reason. Their machines deliver excellent espresso at home, right out of the box. But a Breville coffee machine that isn't cleaned and maintained regularly will underperform, develop faults, and wear out faster than it should. Whether you own a Barista Express, Barista Pro, Oracle, Bambino Plus, Dual Boiler, or any other Breville espresso machine, this 2026 Australian guide covers everything you need to know to look after it properly.

This guide is built from 15+ years of servicing Breville machines at our Sydney workshop. Every cleaning step, descaling tip, and parts recommendation here is what we actually do for customers walking through our doors — not theory pulled from a manual. Breville Coffee Machine Cleaning — Daily, Weekly & Monthly

Regular cleaning is the single most important thing you can do for your Breville espresso machine. Coffee oils oxidise quickly, milk residue hardens inside steam wands, and mineral deposits build up in the boiler and pipes. Left untreated, all of these affect the taste of your coffee and the health of your machine. The good news is that cleaning a Breville coffee machine is straightforward when you build it into a routine.

Daily Cleaning Steps

01

Rinse the portafilter immediately after use

Remove the portafilter after each shot and knock out the spent puck. Rinse the portafilter and basket under hot water to remove coffee grounds and oils. Do not use dish soap in the portafilter every day — it leaves a soapy taste.

02

Purge and wipe the steam wand

Before steaming milk, purge the steam wand for 2 seconds to clear any condensation. After steaming, wipe the wand immediately with a damp cloth and purge again. Dried milk builds up fast and becomes very difficult to remove.

03

Run a blank shot through the group head

With no portafilter inserted, run a brief flush of water through the group head to rinse away loose coffee residue from the shower screen and gasket area.

04

Empty and rinse the drip tray

Empty and rinse the drip tray at the end of each day. A drip tray full of old coffee water develops bacteria quickly and smells unpleasant.

Weekly Cleaning: Backflushing Your Breville

Backflushing removes coffee oil and residue that builds up inside the group head, solenoid valve, and internal pipes. It requires a blind basket (a basket with no holes) and a Breville-compatible cleaning tablet.

01

Insert the blind basket into the portafilter

Place half a Breville cleaning tablet (or one tablet depending on your model) into the blind basket.

02

Run the backflush cycle

Lock the portafilter in and activate the cleaning or backflush program on your machine. The machine will run water through in short pulses to force the cleaning solution back through the group head internals.

03

Rinse with clean water

After the backflush cycle is complete, remove the blind basket, insert an empty portafilter, and run one or two shots of plain water to rinse out any remaining cleaning solution.

Monthly Deep Clean

Once a month, do a more thorough Breville coffee machine cleaning that includes soaking removable parts.

  • Soak portafilter baskets and shower screen — Remove the shower screen (one central screw on most Breville models) and soak it along with the portafilter baskets in a solution of hot water and a cleaning tablet or cafiza powder for 20 to 30 minutes.
  • Clean the group head and gasket area — Use a group head brush to scrub the area around the gasket and inside the shower screen mount. Coffee oils collect in this area and cause bitter flavours over time.
  • Clean the water tank — Remove, empty, and scrub the water tank. Rinse thoroughly before refilling. This prevents the growth of algae and bacteria. Consider fitting a water filter system to reduce mineral buildup.
  • Soak the steam wand tip — Remove the steam wand tip (it usually unscrews) and soak it in hot water. Use a pin to clear any blocked holes if the steam is uneven. Wipe with a fresh microfibre cleaning cloth after every steaming session.
💡

Di Pacci Pro Tip

Only use Breville-approved cleaning tablets or food-grade espresso machine cleaner. Avoid dishwashing liquid — it leaves a soapy taste and can damage internal rubber seals. Shop cleaning products for Breville coffee machines at Di Pacci.

Breville Coffee Machine Warranty & Registration in Australia

Most Breville espresso machines sold in Australia come with a 2-year manufacturer's warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship under normal domestic use. To make sure you are fully covered, register your Breville coffee machine as soon as possible after purchase.

How to Register Your Breville Warranty

01

Find your model and serial number

Turn your machine upside down. The model number and serial number are printed on a label on the base. Note these down before you start.

02

Visit the Breville Australia website

Go to breville.com/au and navigate to the Product Registration section. You will need to create an account or log in.

03

Complete the registration within 30 days

Breville recommends registering within 30 days of purchase. Enter your machine's model number, serial number, purchase date, and retailer details.

04

Keep your proof of purchase

Your receipt or tax invoice is required for all warranty claims. Store it somewhere safe — a digital photo is fine.

What the Breville Warranty Covers (and Doesn't)

  • Covered: Manufacturing defects and component failures under normal use
  • Covered: Faulty switches, heating elements, and control boards
  • Not covered: Damage caused by failure to descale regularly
  • Not covered: Damage from misuse, accidents, or third-party repairs
  • Not covered: Normal wear items such as gaskets and baskets
  • Not covered: Commercial use of a domestic-rated machine
⚠️

Important Warranty Note

Breville can reject a warranty claim if internal scale damage is found and there is no evidence the machine was descaled regularly. Keep a note of your descaling dates as proof of proper maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Breville Coffee Machine Cleaning & Maintenance FAQ

How often should I clean my Breville coffee machine?

Clean your Breville daily by rinsing the portafilter and wiping the steam wand after each use. Backflush weekly with cleaning tablets, deep clean monthly (soak baskets and shower screen), and descale every 2-3 months. Replace the group head gasket every 6-12 months.

How do I descale a Breville espresso machine?

Mix Breville descaler with fresh water in the water tank according to product instructions. Place a large bowl under the group head and steam wand. Activate descale mode using your machine's button menu. The cycle takes 30-45 minutes. After completion, run two full tanks of clean water through before brewing.

What are the most important Breville coffee machine maintenance tips?

Most important habits: rinse portafilter after every shot, always purge and wipe steam wand after steaming milk, backflush weekly with cleaning tablets, descale every 2-3 months, replace group head gasket every 6-12 months, and book annual professional service to inspect pump and boiler.

What Breville coffee machine parts need to be replaced regularly?

The group head gasket should be replaced every 6-12 months. Shower screens should be replaced once they become blocked or corroded (typically once a year). Water filter cartridges need replacement every 2 months if your model uses them. For pump or solenoid valve issues, contact a qualified technician.

What is the warranty on a Breville coffee machine in Australia?

Most Breville coffee machines sold in Australia carry a 2-year manufacturer's warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship under normal domestic use. Register your machine on the Breville Australia website within 30 days of purchase and keep your proof of purchase. Damage from failure to descale regularly may not be covered.

How often should I backflush my Breville coffee machine?

Backflush your Breville once a week using a blind basket and cleaning tablet. This removes coffee oils from the group head, solenoid valve and internal pipes. If you make 5+ coffees per day or use dark roast beans, backflush twice weekly for best results.
