Coffee Filters — Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I rinse my paper filter before brewing?

Rinsing with hot water removes any papery taste and pre-warms the dripper and server — a step that noticeably improves clarity, especially with bleached or natural (unbleached) papers.

What's the difference between bleached and natural filter papers?

Bleached (white) filters are oxygen-bleached and have a more neutral taste out of the box. Natural (brown) filters are unbleached and more eco-friendly, but benefit even more from a thorough rinse to avoid any papery flavour transferring to your brew.

Can I use a V60 filter in a Chemex, or vice versa?

No — they're different shapes and thicknesses. Chemex filters are noticeably thicker, designed to strip more oils and fines for an exceptionally clean cup, and won't sit correctly in a V60 cone. Always match the filter to the specific brewer.

How many filters come in a pack?

Most packs come in quantities of 100, giving most home brewers several months of daily pour over before needing to restock.
