Nuova Simonelli Oscar II Competition DNA for the Home Barista

A compact single-group heat exchanger machine that brews and steams at once — built by the company behind the World Barista Championship machine.

The Nuova Simonelli Oscar II is one of the most distinctive heat exchanger espresso machines in the prosumer market. Engineered in Belforte del Chienti, Italy, it pairs a 2-litre copper heat exchanger boiler, a commercial 58mm group head, a thermo-compensated brew group, and an ergonomic push-pull steam lever in a stainless steel and ABS body around 32cm wide. The result is simultaneous brewing and steaming at a price point that makes it one of the best-value HX machines in Australia.

The Oscar II is built for the home barista who has outgrown entry-level machines and wants real steaming power, a stable thermosiphon brew path, and the tactile feedback of professional-grade hardware. With Nuova Simonelli's commercial heritage built into every component, it consistently performs above its price tier.

Heat Exchanger Technology — Brew and Steam Without Compromise

Unlike a single-boiler machine that forces you to wait and switch between brewing and steaming, the Oscar II's heat exchanger keeps steam pressure constant while delivering brew-ready water to the group head independently. For anyone making milk-based drinks, that means no stop-start workflow — pull your shot and texture milk in one continuous motion.

The brew group is Nuova Simonelli's compact thermosiphon ring group, not an E61. It locks a 58mm portafilter and circulates hot water through the heat exchanger loop to hold a consistent brew temperature, without the long soak-heavy warm-up that E61 groups demand. As with most HX machines, a brief flush of the group after a long idle clears superheated water and brings brew temperature into the ideal range.

Common Questions

What is the difference between the Oscar II and the original Oscar?

The Oscar II is a substantial redesign of the original, with a new stainless steel and ABS body, an ergonomic push-pull steam lever in place of the older steam knob, improved timed-dosing controls, and a refined thermo-compensated brew group. It retains the heat exchanger boiler and 58mm commercial group, but improves steaming ergonomics, build quality, and everyday usability.

Does the Oscar II use a rotary or vibratory pump?

The Oscar II uses a vibratory pump, which is standard for heat exchanger machines at this price point. It ramps cleanly and delivers the high pressure needed for espresso extraction. Paired with the ring group's pre-infusion geometry, it gives a gentle, consistent start to each shot.

Can the Oscar II be used in a small café or office?

Yes. The HX boiler and optional direct-plumb variant make it suitable for low-to-moderate volume office and light café environments. Its compact 32cm-wide footprint makes it popular in specialty roaster showrooms, co-working spaces, and home offices where a full commercial machine isn't practical.

Does the Oscar II require flushing before pulling a shot?

Like most HX machines, the Oscar II benefits from a short flush of the group head if it has been idle for a while. This clears superheated water from the heat exchanger loop and brings the brew temperature into the optimal range. A brief flush after long idle periods is good practice for consistent extraction.

What grinder should I pair with the Oscar II?

The Oscar II deserves a quality espresso grinder so the grinder isn't the limiting factor. Di Pacci can match it with grinders across a range of budgets and burr sizes. Call our team on (02) 9758 0760 for personalised grinder matching advice based on your beans and workflow.
